S - Sailing

Course Description:

This course includes theory and practical sailing to ensure students can be skilled and qualified as Crew or Day Skippers on sailing vessels. Students also go on a three day sailing trip!

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completing this course, students will be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of:

  • the parts, rigging and winches on a sailboat
  • the mainsail and it’s hoisting, reefing and setting systems
  • the foresail and it’s hoisting or furling, reefing and setting systems
  • the terminology used on sailboats
  • steering and common manoeuvres for sailboats
  • gybing and action required to avoid an accidental gybe
  • safe practices and seamanship
  • heaving to, man overboard and lookout procedures
  • emergency procedures
