S - Sailing

Course Description:
This course includes theory and practical sailing to ensure students can be skilled and qualified as ISPA Competent Crew, or with previous experience, Day or Coastal Skippers on sailing vessels. Students also go on a three day sailing trip!
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completing this course, students will be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of:
- the parts, rigging and winches on a sailboat
- the mainsail and it’s hoisting, reefing and setting systems
- the foresail and it’s hoisting or furling, reefing and setting systems
- the terminology used on sailboats
- steering and common manoeuvres for sailboats
- gybing and action required to avoid an accidental gybe
- safe practices and seamanship
- heaving to, man overboard and lookout procedures
- emergency procedures
